Athletics and Cross Country@KWS

Athletics and Cross Country carnivals at Kinross Wolaroi are whole school events with students competing for their tutor house. Student participation is both valued and encouraged with house points earned for attempting each event.

Both the Preparatory and High School Cross Country carnivals are held at the PLC campus. From these carnivals teams are selected to represent KWS at either the HICES carnival (Prep) or the Western Schools carnival (High). Successful students may then progress through the various levels of competition with the pinnacle event being the National Allschools . Over recent years a number of cross country runners for KWS have been successful in reaching national and even international levels of competition. Notable performances include Veronica Wallington, NSW team captain 2008, Australian Team Gold Medalist and World Championship individual Bronze Medalist and Tamsyn Moana Veale, NSW Allschools Champion and national medallist.

The Preparatory and High School Athletics carnivals are held at the Wolaroi campus with students again competing for their tutor house. From these carnivals teams are selected to represent KWS at either the HICES carnival (Prep) or the ISA carnival (High), both of which are held at the SOPAC track in Sydney. Training is offered to all the athletes prior to these carnivals and, in recent years, has lead to impressive results. In 2010 the Prep team was awarded the HICES Percentage Shield and placed second in the Overall Aggregate Trophy. Twenty four students were successful in gaining selection in the HICES team to contest the CIS Championships, a great achievement for a relatively small school. A stand out performance this season was that of Jemima McCalman who won the NSW Allschools, 11 years 800m and will contest the Nationals in November. Not to be out done, the High School team took out the Girls Aggregate Trophy at the ISA carnival then went on to combine with the boys to be named champion co-educational school at the CIS carnival.
