The Making of Kinross Wolaroi School

In 1886, on the corner of Byng and Sale Streets in Orange, a small school for boys called Weymouth House was opened. Privately owned, it was an immediate success and a larger site became necessary. The Wolaroi Mansion was purchased in 1893 enabling the boys to move to larger premises and a change of name to Wolaroi Grammar School.

In 1925 the Methodist Church took control and changed the name to Wolaroi College. The College continued to educate boys from the Methodist community until 1973 when girls were enrolled.

The Presbyterian Ladies' College opened in 1928 providing an education based on Christian principles for girls in the Western area. In 1973 PLC also became co-educational and changed its name to The Kinross School.

The Kinross School Council accepted the challenge and responsibilities of Wolaroi College and in 1975 the schools amalgamated to become Kinross Wolaroi School. With the creation of the Uniting Church in Australia in 1977 the School became part of that Church.

Today, the School is firmly committed to co-education with separate boarding sites using its two main campuses. Classes and boys' boarding occur at the Wolaroi Site on Bathurst Road within the city boundary. Girl boarders live on the PLC site on Coronation Drive just 4km from the main site. The girls are bussed to classes each day and enjoy the luxury of a home away from home.
