After 29 Kinross Wolaroi School Open Days, many would think that they've "seen it all before", but this could not be further from the truth!
With the groundsmen putting in that extra 10% this week (even thought they already work at 110%!), the grounds and gardens were an absolute picture. With an extra bit of spring cleaning and attention to detail by staff and students all week, everything was in readiness for what is our biggest showcase day of the year.
Some shy and nervous faces made their way to the DPA before 9am, as the new Year 7's (and their parents) for 2010 were greeted and readied for the placement testing session to come. Mr Kennelly & Mrs Gavin made everyone feel at home, and a great video presentation from the current Year 7 kids added that 'welcome' feel to the morning.
Following the delectable morning tea from the Hospitality students, Ms McKay and the Textiles crew performed a simply amazing Fashion Parade in front of a HUGE crowd. School tours by the Prefects allowed new and current families to see every part of the school in detail.
Other highlights of the day included ...
Awesome ice-creams on sale from the Year 9 Business groups
An amazing display of Prep School Scientia projects
Arguably the best EVER performance by our orchestra
A cadet parade beyond belief
Sporting, musical and cultural displays that demonstrated the true meaning of 'co-curricular' involvement.
A feeling around the school of immense pride.
Phew - another Open Day has passed - well done to all who worked so hard - you were rewarded with a fabulous day.
For more than a decade at KWS, one of the highlights of the calendar in the Prep School is always Grandparents Day.
Greeted at the gate by students hosts, eager to share hugs and show off their year of work, the grandparents are treated to a day of songs, performances, exhibits, tea and scones, guided tours and good cheer from their grandchildren.
The performances by individuals and groups in the Derek Pigot Auditorium were all given rapturous applause by the enthusiastic audience, with the highlights of the morning being the kindergarten classes performing their poem "I have noodles in my nostrils".
Congratulations must go to Mr Mac, all of the Prep staff and to each and every student involved for putting on such a fantastic day for the grandparents.
Mrs Ridge organised a wonderful day of 'Ladies' experiences for the girls of Kinross Wolaroi last weekend. Representatives from the June Dally Watkins finishing school came to Orange to spend the day with our (already lovely) ladies, to help them become even more polished in areas of posture, eating, manners, dress and behaviour. In what turned out to be a very valuable day for all present, our girls walked, talked, ate and paraded, and were given a certficate of completion. The event was very timely for some girls, as they make their debut on the 14th November and will no doubt put many of the new skills learnt to the test!
In what turned out to be a big weekend for the girls at KWS, Mr Shepherd took some of the girls from Miller House to Lake Canobolas for a day of fun and 'bonding'. Star attractions proved to be the floating pontoon in the Lake and Mr Shepherd's catamaran. Some rosy red shoulders were on display by days end - ouch!
It what could be described as 'just another week' at Kinross Wolaroi, our sporting achievers have excelled and been prominent both on and off the sporting field.
ATHLETICS
Grade 4 student Jemima McCalman competed in the heats and final of the 800m at the State Athletics Championships on Wednesday the 28th & Thursday the 29thof October. She ran a personal best of 2 min 38 sec to win her heat and then another amazing PB in the final of 2:34. She was placed 3rd in the final and will now go on to compete at the National Athletic Championships in late November. Jemima has been training extremely hard and very much deserves this extremely impressive result. Congratulations and GO JEMIMA !
CRICKET
Mr Hull, the MIC Cricket, puts out a weekly newsletter highlighting all good things cricket each week - lately, this bulletin has been HUGE ! Exciting times ahead for all cricketers, but especially departing Yr 12 student Chris Tremain, Yr 12 student Angus Polhill, and indeed all of the First XI ...
Last Saturday saw the official opening of the KWS Rowing season with a club luncheon by the KWS pool. A BBQ lunch followed on from the AGM with sunny weather and a crowd of hungry young rowers appreciating the work of the mums and dads on duty. Federal Member for Calare, Mr John Cobb was present to help with the dedicating of the new boat : The "Brian Kennelly". Newly appointed Head of KWS Rowing, Mr Haimish Karrasch, was heartily welcomed by the very large crowd, and he looks forward to the years ahead in this position. The Loreto Normanhurst regatta will be held on Saturday 14th November, and this regatta has proven to be a great stepping stone for the season ahead for our rowers.
