    3 July, 2017

KWS sent a team of 24 swimmers (18 swimming individual events and 6 contributing to relays) to the NSW Country Championships at Sydney Olympic Park over the weekend.

After two big days of racing, the team finished 11th out of 64 teams on the point score table and 9th in the medal tally, a massive improvement on previous results which saw KWS finish 32nd in the point score and winning one medal in 2016.
Many of the teams ahead of us had over 30 swimmers competing in individual events.

66% of our individual swims and 80% of the relay teams achieved a personal best (PB). Team spirit and support was evident and the mood was positive right from the first race, continuing throughout both days. This spirit was reflected in the results, even at the end of a very long weekend.

The relays were a particular highlight with eight out of ten teams swimming much faster than their entry times, some great top-ten finishes and two podium finishes.

Collette Lyons continued her impressive form finishing with three individual gold medals from her six events and finishing an impressive 4th in the 14yrs & under 400 Free. Collette is only 12 and has two more years in this event. The 12yrs 100 Breast was hotly contested with Collette winning by 1/100th of a second.

Emily Nobbs showed her recovery from an injury early in the year is well behind her picking up medals in her favoured stroke in the 50 and 200 and only just missing out on a bronze in the 100 Breast.

Year 7 student, Gabriella Shilling, showed that she is one to watch in the future with a fantastic swim in the 12yrs 200 Backstroke. Gabby has been a representative swimmer for 12 months and picked up a Bronze in the 200 Backstroke, just missing 3rd in the 100 Backstroke.

Hugh Gillham swam an amazing PB to medal in his favoured event the 100 Fly.

Zac Lewis produced a heart stopping finish to take bronze in the 100 Breast.

Oliver McLaughlin produced some great swims over the weekend picking up bronze in the 200 Backstroke and just missing a podium finish in the 100 Backstroke.

Our senior boys and girls all swam well, picking up lots of PB’s and top-ten finishes. With medals difficult to come by due to the open nature of the event, claiming a top-ten finish is an enormous achievement for our swimmers.

The team would like to thanks the parents, coaches and helpers who make success at these events possible. Swimming is a team effort and we could not achieve these great results without a great deal of help. The team will attend the ACT state championships in early August as a warm up to NSW State Championships at the end of August.

Congratulations to all swimmers on a fantastic weekend of competition!
