Junior School Performing Arts

Music

Kinross Wolaroi School offers a thriving co-curricular music program which complements the foundational skills learnt in the music classroom.

Our Junior School ensembles accommodate a variety of musical interests and abilities so that from an early stage, students are given the opportunity to learn the valuable social and technical skills of group work, under the direction of a conductor. These groups rehearse before and after school and during lunchtimes. They serve the school and wider community through performances at concerts, school events, eisteddfods and on special occasions throughout the year.

The following ensembles are offered to our Junior School students:

  • Junior Strings
  • Junior Band
  • Chamber Ensembles
  • Junior Percussion Ensemble
  • Koristers (selective choir)
  • Junior Dance

Our ensemble directors are talented and highly skilled music educators who foster a creative environment in which students can grow and flourish. Additionally, this program is strengthened by every student participating in a Junior School choir (organised by stages) which perform at school assemblies and other events.

During the school day many students take advantage of the specialised individual tuition available in woodwind, brass, strings, percussion, piano, speech and drama, voice and guitar.

Drama

Each year, students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are introduced to the dramatic arts through musical theatre productions. Students have the opportunity to dance, sing and act, giving every child a valuable insight into the many components of theatre production. Our Junior School productions are highly regarded by the broader arts community, with parents particularly enjoying the growth in confidence and stage craft in their children.

Junior School Drama Performances are:

  • Kindergarten – Year 2 – a ‘home grown’ production written to include every child in the group
  • Year 3 and 4 – an organically produced workshop devised and performed by the children themselves
  • Year 5 and 6 – Award winning, comprehensive musical theatre production

Our staff members are actively involved in each drama production, through choreography, costuming, make-up, lighting, props and stage direction. Performance time is one of the highlights of our year.

As well as pursuing excellence, the Performing Arts faculty aims to foster the growth of students’ imagination and education through encouragement, collaboration and team work. This goal is achieved through our extensive co-curricular program, with particular emphasis on providing musical pathways for students of all abilities across all mainstream instruments and vocal pursuits.

Drama

Building on the foundations laid in the Junior School, the Secondary School musical is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore and extend their talents in a professional venue, under the specialist vocal, dance and stage direction of KWS staff. Year after year, students are exposed to a variety of mainstream musical theatre productions which are well-known and loved by audiences around the world, whilst also learning the skills of adapting high-quality material for a student body working in a local theatre. The school musical is a highlight in the annual school calendar.
