Innovative Approaches to New-Age Learning

Innovative Approaches to Practical Learning | Kinross Wolaroi School

Practical, hands-on learning has always been an integral part of any school curriculum, but as times change, so do the expectations of universities and employers. Students need to be able to grasp new, essential skills through innovative learning that focuses on retention and on gaining the knowledge needed to thrive in the future.

The fundamental principles of learning in a conventional classroom setting were recently challenged at our school. The COVID-19 health pandemic saw wide spread closures amongst our society and individuals were instructed to stay home. Our physical school campus closed, and in a matter of days we moved to remote learning, offering our students education online. This was a new phenomenon that the world was facing together, with no rule book or guidelines to follow. What we achieved with the help of our teachers, staff and students was remarkable. We created Kinross Wolaroi Virtual; a diverse teaching environment that catered to the needs of individual pupils from different walks of life, each with their own preferred ways of learning. Using innovative approaches based on collaboration, students achieve a well-rounded, expansive education over a period of 8 weeks that will shape their learning well into the future.

Remote Learning: In the midst of the COVID-19 health pandemic, our students and staff seamlessly transition to our Kinross Wolaroi Virtual learning model. Our students and staff interacted and undertook lessons with the help of technology, ensuring that we could continue to deliver high quality education in the midst of uncertain times.

The importance of hands-on learning

In the information age of the 21st century, an evolved set of skills are required in young professionals. Employers need a flexible workforce that are proficient in:

  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Problem-solving
  • Self-regulation
  • IT systems

It’s important to strike the balance between academic studies and hands-on activities in learning today. The experiences that our students were involved with in the last 8 weeks will be life changing; more adaptable to overcome challenges, more willing to be involved even with a lack of physical connections, all whilst prioritising work flows and taking on self-direction when necessary.

In addition to the clear professional benefits offered by hands-on work, experiences like our remote learning environment can also boost an individual’s confidence, self-esteem and social skills.

Kinross Wolaroi Virtual: Our students were encouraged to set up a work station in their home where they could focus on the task at hand. However, more importantly, this gave students the ability to step away from this pre-defined space to keep active, reset in break periods and to enjoy some down time at the end of the day.

There is no doubt that hands-on school programs provide opportunities for children to interact with teachers and their peers, watching how others approach tasks and solve problems. Children can explore their capabilities and gain a better understanding about how they’re conditioned to learn - which may not always be through purely theoretical studies.

The experiences of our students when undertaking learning through our Kinross Wolaroi Virtual platform has no doubt taught them important transferable skills for the future. The opportunity to immerse themselves in their remote and online world has developed new and exciting learning habits with a core focus on the relevance and appreciation of collaboration and self-focus.

Every student was treated as an individual and we tailored each one of our programs, focusing on the individual involvement of each student in all of our subjects. KWS set our new standards for holistic, contextual wellbeing with active engagement amongst all being our top priority. The involvement has opened up endless opportunities for the future of the students, but also building essential ties within our school community in the absence of physical connections.
